Quote Of The Week - Week 6
“Why is humanity so obsessed with art when it is essentially useless?”
Desiree Ragusa, actress, on the reason we love art
I keep quoting Desiree's article: “Paintings don’t provide shelter, nor music food. Poetry doesn’t provide safety. Dance doesn’t create vaccines. And yet, art has been a feature since the earliest recorded discoveries of civilization […] During times of celebration, or mourning or fear and distress, we turn to the arts [...] We write poems, start paining, we open a piano lid that has been closed for a decade. We start online magazines, we write journals, take beautiful photographs. We became bakers and chefs."
Why? Because art makes us optimistic. It helps us to connect and communicate.
It can boost our self-esteem by providing a sense of accomplishment.
It can heal trauma and distract from constant stress and tension by using our imagination and spending time on observation.
Studying and working on beautiful things can give a break to a restless mind, sometimes even more than that – art can help us stay sane by giving meaning to the days.
It can enhances our problem-solving skills.
To summarize, art might be essentially useless from a certain angle but it might be a life-saving tool from another.
