Have you had your booster today?

Have you had your booster today?

Immunity booster shots stormed the market in recent years. These cold-pressed shots blend superfood roots, powerful herbs, spices and fruit in small high-concentration packs that promise to strengthen your immune system.

The nutrition column is sponsored by The Raw Machine

Nothing new under the sun, the ingredients of these immunity shots have been around for centuries. Their healing properties have been known for a long time but now the wellness industry has re-discovered them and given these new “magic” anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory recipes to smoothie shops, health bars and grocery stores, marketing them towards an increasingly health conscious crowd.

These wellness shots do have health benefits and they do contain necessary vitamins and nutrients that work as supplements. Supplements are not magical foods that can solve your health problems but they can be beneficial and they may help to increase your nutrient intake. Just bear in mind they cannot replace or compare to an overall healthy diet and healthy lifestyle.

If you decide to buy these shots make sure to pick those that have no added sugar. If you prefer to save money (they are quite pricey) and help to produce less food packaging waste, you can make your own shots at home. They are inexpensive and easy to make!

We have an easy-to-make recipe for you provided by BWG’s new sponsor, the health centric superfood track The Raw Machine.

Simple Immune Booster Shot Recipe (only 3 ingredients):

- 1 lemon (very high in vitamin C; may aid weight loss, reduce the risk of heart disease, anemia, kidney stones, digestive issues and cancer)

- a small finger-size piece of ginger (anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties; may improve brain function, heart health; may lower blood sugar, reduce cholesterol levels; may aid digestion and reduce period pain)

- a tablespoon of turmeric powder or a small finger-size portion of turmeric root (a great anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant)

Steps:

1. Squeeze the lemon with a citrus juicer

2. Wash the ginger and the turmeric (if using fresh not powdered) and place them in a blender

3. Add the lemon juice and blend it all

4. This step is optional – you can drink the juice as-is or use a strainer to filter it before consumption

5. Enjoy your shot! If the taste is a bit too intense for you to enjoy, just remember that you're doing something good for your body

Note: I prefer to make a bigger portion in advance so I use 4-5 lemons and bigger pieces of ginger and turmeric. I store the juice in the fridge in a glass jar for 4-5 days and have a shot every morning.
